Negotiating spot freight rates in a dynamic market requires market intelligence, timing, and leverage. Most independent truckers lose hundreds of dollars per load by accepting the broker's initial load board posting or giving away their bottom-line rate too quickly.
1. Never Accept the First Post
Freight brokers typically post loads with 15% to 25% margin built in. When a load posts at $2,200 on 700 miles ($3.14/mi), the broker often has $2,600 to $2,700 approved by the shipper. Counter at $2,750 with immediate capacity and trailer specifications.
2. Leverage Outbound Tender Volume (OTVI)
Before calling, know the outbound rejection rate of the market. In tight markets like Atlanta or Dallas where trucks are scarce, brokers will pay significant premiums to avoid service failure on shipper contracts.
3. Lock Detention in Writing
Always verify that 2 hours free time max and $50.00–$75.00/hour detention is explicitly written on the Rate Confirmation. Verbal promises mean zero when docks are congested.
